Indonesia to create economic zone for medical tourism
The government of Indonesia has approved a proposal to establish an international health tourism special economic zone (SEZ) in the city of Batam
The SEZ, which will encompass an area of 47.17 hectares, will include a new international-standard hospital managed by Mayapada Healthcare; an international nursing academy; a ‘medtech park’ featuring a range of conference and work spaces; alongside hotels, retail spaces, and residential accommodation.
The two main investors in the scheme are the Mayapada Group and Apollo Hospitals India.
According to a report in the Jakarta Globe, approximately two million Indonesians seek medical treatment abroad every year. The SEZ aims to attract around 2% (40,000) of those medical tourists.
Elsewhere, healthcare provider Starcare International Hospital recently opened a new site in the Nigerian capital of Lagos.
