An ethos of trust, care, and tailored support
Mark Smith, Commercial Director at The London Clinic, talks to ITIJ about partnerships, international patients, and their innovative treatment solutions
Your role as Commercial Director includes a focus on the development of strategic partnerships with insurers; how do you ensure that these partnerships work for both parties?
To ensure partnerships are beneficial, it’s important to define clear, honest objectives with open communication and mutually agreed KPIs. With this basic premise in place, it enables you to work together on projects, building trust and delivering benefits for both parties.
Specifically, to insurance, it’s also crucial to understand the insurer’s value proposition, evaluate cultural alignment and identify potential conflicts. If you can anticipate and address areas of difference early in the process you have a much better chance of fostering a successful long-term relationship. In addition, to ensure partnerships with insurers work, the clinic must align with insurer needs for speed and quality, provide transparent pricing and clear communication to manage patient expectations, and maintain high standards of care to satisfy both patients and insurers.

Are you seeing an increase in the number of international self-pay and insured patients choosing to come to The London Clinic for their care? What do you think the driving forces are behind the increase?
Yes, we are. The clinic’s reputation for world-renowned specialists, state-of-the-art technology and exceptional nursing care underpins its success across all international markets. When an international patient contacts the clinic, they receive tailored support from our dedicated team whether they are self-pay, government paid or international insured patients.
Outside of the specific benefits of being treated at The London Clinic, the proportionate increase in international self-pay and insurance patients reflects changes in market demographics. Patients coming to us from different countries to the traditional HCC markets and insurance/self-pay are the more prevalent payer types in these emerging markets.
What are the latest new diagnostic and treatment solutions that The London Clinic is offering its patients?
The London Clinic is constantly investing in new technology to ensure we are delivering high levels of care to our patients. If I was to highlight some of our more recent innovations I would point to several new diagnostic and treatment solutions including: the MAGNETOM Vida 3T MRI scanner for detailed imaging, Contrast Enhanced Mammography for enhanced breast cancer detection, and the RheniumSCT non-invasive treatment for skin cancers. We also relatively recently opened a stateof-the-art Rapid Diagnostics Centre for quick access to diagnosis and treatment of urology, gynaecology, breast, and dermatology.
Our latest investment has been to update our clinics with HyperArc. HyperArc is a cuttingedge form of radiotherapy that allows doctors to target multiple tumours in the brain with extreme precision, all in a single treatment session. Unlike traditional methods, it delivers radiation from many different angles using computer-guided technology. This helps to treat the tumours more effectively while reducing damage to surrounding healthy brain tissue.
Catering to the needs of patients from different cultures is a key part of attracting new patients. What are some of the specific ways in which The London Clinic manages expectations and demands from patients from around the world?
The London Clinic manages patient expectations from different cultures by focusing on cultural competency, which includes offering culturally sensitive services like language support, providing culturally appropriate training for staff, and ensuring that patients are treated with respect and compassion, as well as allowing patients to express their personal needs and beliefs without judgment. This approach helps to build trust and improve the overall patient experience by acknowledging the unique needs of everyone, regardless of their cultural background. The International team at The London Clinic are the champions of this ethos.
