Tawuniya launches an insurance policy for Umrah pilgrims
A new comprehensive insurance policy covering Umrah pilgrims has been launched in Saudi Arabia, and uptake has been high
The insurance policy, sold by Saudi Arabian insurance company Tawuniya, was launched on 1 January 2020, and covers pilgrims for hospitalisation and medical expenses, delay and cancellations of trips, and death and injury suffered in accidents and disasters. The insurance cover is valid for 30 days and provides coverage of up to SAR100,000 (US$26,700) per person. The insurance coverage is linked to the visitor's visa, and the relevant policy becomes effective upon the arrival of the Umrah pilgrim in the kingdom.
The current Umrah season began in September 2019 and will last through until around the same time this year. As of the week beginning 6 Jan 2020, official statistics revealed that more than 2.7 million Umrah visas have been issued, and the total number of Umrah pilgrims who have visited the kingdom exceeded 2.4 million.
Tawuniya signed an agreement with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to provide insurance services to Umrah and Haj pilgrims for four years. And the Ministry has since announced that in the first 10 days of 2020, the number of policies issued has almost reached 180,000.
