Orlando and Cancun top the lists again

Travel insurance and assistance company, Allianz Partners has found the top 10 summer travel destinations of American travellers this summer.

The company analysed more than 1.6 million flight itineraries between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day (29 May) and Labor Day (4 September). It found that 73 per cent of itineraries were for domestic US trips and 27 per cent were for holidays abroad.

The highest-ranked domestic destination is Orlando, Florida, while Cancun in Mexico is the top international destination. Miami has also returned to the list, taking the place of Denver, Colorado.

Turks and Caicos has joined the list this year in ninth place, along with the US Virgin Islands in tenth place.

London is the only European destination featured in this year’s review, taking eighth place, which has been more popular due to the coronation festivities.

The survey revealed that for international trips, the trip length favoured by a majority of travellers (59 per cent) is seven days, and the highest volume of travellers departs on Saturdays – 27 May, 10 June and 17 June. Domestically, trip lengths of six (49 per cent) and seven (48 per cent) days split the schedule, with 1 July as the most popular departure date ahead of the nation’s Independence Day holiday.

“Claiming their seventh consecutive year atop our summer travel rosters, Orlando and Cancun are tried and true destinations trusted to deliver some of the most-memorable vacations,” said Daniel Durazo, Director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.
