Ministry of Tourism confirm that the number of arrivals at regional Greek airports was higher in September 2022 than in the same month of 2019

Figures released by the Greek Ministry of Tourism show that international arrivals to the country increased by 7.2 per cent last month, compared to September 2019 levels.

The destinations with the highest spike in arrival numbers were Corfu, Chania, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Kos. Corfu and Chania both saw increases of 15 per cent, with the others 14 per cent, according to Vassilis Kikilias, Minister for Tourism of Greece.

Kikilias said tourism is boosting the Greek economy and supporting it in a time of global crisis. He explained that the reason for the increased numbers during this year’s tourist season was because of strategic agreements with other countries. American Airlines operated 63 direct flights from the US every week, for example. He is currently negotiating with airlines and tour operators for the extension of the season.

Greece only removed their remaining Covid-related travel restrictions in May this year.
