The fall, which occurred at around 9pm, may be related to a mattress fire in the same room

A 23-year-old tourist has fallen to his death at the Meliá Costa Atlantis hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, fell from the balcony of a room where a fire occurred on 8 October. The cause of the fire has not been officially stated, but local reports suggest that a mattress caught fire.

Following the arrival of emergency services personnel at around 9pm, nearly 500 other guests were evacuated from the hotel.

The tourist was then pronounced dead at the scene, the fire put out, and an investigation launched into the cause of the incident.

No other guests are believed to have been injured during the incident, and they were allowed to return to their rooms shortly after their initial evacuation.

Balcony falls are a relatively common occurrence at hotels and resorts – two men died in July by falling from the Ibiza Rocks hotel in separate incidents, while a third was seriously injured falling from the Marco Polo Hotel, also in Ibiza, in August.
