Ibiza hotel suspends events following balcony deaths
Spain’s Ibiza Rocks hotel and music venue has paused its events calendar following two balcony falls on its premises
A music venue in the popular Spanish tourist destination of Ibiza has cancelled its upcoming events after two UK tourists died at events it hosted.
The men died at the Ibiza Rocks hotel and music venue in two separate incidents. Gary Kelly, 19, died there on 21 July, while Evan Thomson, 26, passed away two weeks beforehand on 7 July.
Spanish authorities told the BBC that Kelly died in the early hours of Monday after a fall from a balcony, in an incident that appeared to be accidental.
Ibiza Rocks released a statement saying staff were “deeply shocked and devastated” by the incidents, and that events were being paused due to the “seriousness of the situation, and out of respect for those involved”.
It also confirmed that it was working with authorities to investigate the cause of the incidents, and that it would be in touch by email with customers impacted by the cancellations.
A British national also recently died in a white-water rafting accident on the Guisane river in southeastern France.
