balcony fall in Ibiza

The case highlights a growing spate of serious balcony incidents in Ibiza that are prompting concern among local authorities and insurers

A 21-year-old foreign tourist has been hospitalised in a serious condition after falling around 3m from a hotel in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, on Monday evening.

Emergency medical services were called to the Marco Polo Hotel at approximately 8:30pm, providing initial stabilisation before transferring the patient to the Nuestra SeƱora del Rosario Polyclinic. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with reported chest and head injuries.

The incident forms part of a wider pattern of balcony falls in Sant Antoni this summer. Local authorities confirm that five fatalities have already occurred, compared with only one throughout the entire 2024 season.

In response, Mayor Marcos Serra has requested toxicology reports from the General State Administration to help determine the potential contributing factors. The Civil Guard is continuing to investigate.

The sharp rise in balcony-related incidents has raised concerns for local authorities, hotels, and insurers alike, particularly given the concentration of cases within a short period and, in several instances, at the same establishment.
