Record August arrivals in Chile
August saw tourist arrivals in Chile reach record highs since 1988, after a steady 16-per-cent increase in arrivals over the preceding eight months, according to Chilean under-secretary for tourism Jacqueline Plass. “Between January and March 2012 we received 2,338,214 tourists from other countries, which represents an increase of 16.4 per cent compared to the same period a year ago,” she said. “The increase was particularly intense from Argentina, [with] 30 per cent; Colombia, [with] 25.5 per cent; Brazil, [with] 19 per cent; and Spain, [with] 15.5 per cent.” She added that Chile is seeing ‘ the results of the promotion work displayed in a joint effort by the government and the private sector in those markets which we have selected as priorities: Argentina, Brazil, [the] US, Spain, [the] UK, France, Germany, Peru, Colombia and Australia’.
