It’s not so shipshape on Norwegian Joy
Passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy have fallen ill for the second time, calling into question the cleanliness of the ship
The ship docked at San Pedro, Los Angeles, on 1 December after several passengers fell ill. The weekend prior, a similar incident occurred, with six passengers falling ill, four of which were transported to the hospital with gastrointestinal upset.
This is the second time in a week that this ship has been forced to dock at the Port of Los Angeles due to passenger illness
The Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement that, this time, 19 passengers onboard the ship were evaluated for flu-like symptoms but declined to be transported to the hospital.
Authorities on scene said that the cruise line is expected to be sanitised and will then head back out.
Hahn has called on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work closely with county health officials to ensure passengers aboard the Norwegian Joy do not become part of an infectious disease outbreak in the harbour area. “This is the second time in a week that this ship has been forced to dock at the Port of Los Angeles due to passenger illness and it raises serious concerns about the hygiene of this ship. If the ship is not cleaned to a point that ensures the health and safety of its passengers, it should not be allowed to leave dock,” she said.
Norwegian Cruise Line stated that the safety, security and wellbeing of its guests and crew is its number one priority. “As such, we operate at the very highest public health standards. During Norwegian Joy’s Mexican Riviera sailing, a few guests on board experienced a stomach related illness. To mitigate any impact of this rare occurrence, we implemented stringent sanitation procedures. As always, we will continue to monitor this situation,” it said.
