Student travel

US-based travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip has announced the launch of its new Academic Explorer travel protection programme

The programme is designed to protect the often significant financial investment made in domestic and international trips, providing trip cancellation and trip interruption protection along with additional travel insurance benefits, including baggage, baggage delay, and travel delay, as well as travel assistance services.

The Academic Explorer programme, underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, provides two different plans: Adventurer (offered direct by schools) and Discoverer (offered by educational travel providers).

The policies allow schools, K-12 and higher education establishments the ability to offer their students, faculty and chaperons a travel insurance solution that focuses on trip cancellations and trip interruptions – important elements in these uncertain times, and something Spanish insurer Travelfine recently introduced with its latest product for students and overseas workers, Cancellation Freedom. Cancel for any reason coverage can be added to the programme in most states, providing partial reimbursement to those who need to cancel academic travel due to a reason not otherwise covered by their plan, including cancellations due to fear of contracting Covid-19.

"As schools begin to contemplate, plan and return to their academic travel schedules, it is extremely important to mitigate the financial risks during the pandemic," says Suzanne Morrow, Vice-President of Business Development for InsureMyTrip.

Some peril highlights included in the programme include US Department of State travel advisories and civil disorder, while tuition can be included as an insurable trip cost in the plans. The programme will be offered through schools, colleges, insurance brokers, and educational travel providers.
