Four killed in avalanche at a ski resort in Utah
The avalanche, which reporters say is among the deadliest in the history of the state, occurred on 6 February at Millcreek Canyon near Salt Lake City, US
Four skiers were killed and a further four injured after being caught in an avalanche at the ski resort in Utah. It has been reported that the Utah Avalanche Center had announced earlier that day, via Twitter, that there were ‘dangerous avalanche conditions’ in the region.
According to reports, all eight skiers were carrying safety gear, including avalanche beacons, at the time that they avalanche struck. The survivors dug themselves out of the avalanche and called emergency services, BBC News reports.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our prayers go out to the victims and families involved,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox said. “We are grateful to the first responders and others who engaged in this rescue and recovery effort. With avalanche danger high right now, please exercise extreme caution.”
In early January 2021, an avalanche hit the hit the Gora Otdelnaya resort complex outside the Russian Arctic city of Norilsk, killing three people.
