Earthquake kills two tourists in Kos
An earthquake has left at least two dead on the popular Greek tourist-destination Kos. The 6.7-magnitude quake hit at 01:31 a.m local time early on 21 July around 12 kilometres (seven miles) northeast of the town, according to the US Geological Survey.
The BBC suggested that at least 100 other tourists were injured during the earthquake, while several were injured in Bodrum, Turkey, which was also hit.
The two deaths were caused by debris from either a collapsed wall or old building, said local police. It was also confirmed that one victim was Swedish and the other Turkish. Kos regional government official Giorgos Halkidios said that the army is supporting the emergency services with the rescue operation.
The mayor of Kos, Giorgos Kyritsis, said that the centre of the town has been the worst hit due to the historic buildings in the area, many of which were built before earthquake-proof building regulations were implemented.
