Coverage not triggered by terrorism threat
US-based travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth has explained to consumers that despite the travel alert for Europe issued by the US Department of State on 1 May due to the continued threat of terrorism, travel insurance can still be purchased for trips to European destinations, but in order for coverage to be triggered, a terrorist attack must occur.
“The threat of terrorism is not enough to trigger coverage,” commented Squaremouth spokesperson Megan Singh. “In order for a traveller to be covered by the terrorism benefit, they must be unable to take their trip because of a terrorist attack at their destination.”
According to Squaremouth, to be covered by the terrorism benefit, an attack must meet the following requirements: be deemed an act of terrorism by the US Department of State; occur within seven to 30 days of the traveller’s departure date, depending on the policy; occur in or near a city listed on the traveller’s itinerary.
