Allianz analyses Valentine’s Day travel

As highlighted by Allianz Global Assistance (Allianz) USA, ‘couples are heading to warmer destinations this Valentine’s Day,’ with New York City (NYC), US and Cancun, Mexico marking the top two holiday locations.

Travel insurance and assistance company Allianz reviewed Americans' travel plans for roundtrip flights for two on the weekends immediately before and after 14 February and have disclosed the list of top 10 domestic and top 10 international flights for the period.

The domestic flight results revealed that Los Angeles, US is the second most popular destination in 2019, compared to its place as fifth most popular in 2018. While NYC reigned top of the list for its third year running, Las Vegas fell from number two in 2018 to number 10 this year. Other destinations which made the list include Miami (fifth), Phoenix (ninth), Seattle (third), San Francisco (fourth), Chicago (sixth), Atlanta (seventh) and Boston (eighth).

Meanwhile, Mexico and Canada were shown to be the favoured Valentine’s destinations for international trips; Cancun was the most popular spot in Mexico, with San Jose Del Cabo the third most popular, Mexico City seventh and Puerto Vallarta eighth; for Canadian destinations, Vancouver and Toronto came fifth and six respectively.

Other top international destinations included: San Juan, Puerto Rico, which ranked second out of all international flights; Nassau, Bahamas, which came fourth; Oranjestad, Aruba, ninth; and Montego Bay, Jamaica last but certainly not least on the list.

Daniel Durazo, Director of Communications and Marketing at Allianz Global Assistance USA, warned: “On a romantic Valentine's Day weekend, flight delays or cancellations, lost baggage and illness are the last things you want to worry about. But unexpected travel hiccups can happen anytime and anywhere, whether you're celebrating in a metropolitan city or on a tropical beach. Luckily, the right travel protection policy can provide peace-of-mind and make travel disruptions easier to handle if they do occur."
