Quality healthcare in Mexico
Dr Salvador Belilty Haro, Founder and CEO of Logimedex, talks to ITIJ about the Mexican healthcare system, vital partners, and the current economic environment
You founded Logimedex in 2017. Why did you set up a medical assistance company in Mexico at that time?
Back then, while I had the position of Hospital Director, I came to realise the communication gaps between hospitals in Mexico and foreign insurance and assistance companies. This problem originated due to the inherent complexity of the Mexican health system. Lack of understanding of the specifics of this system led to inefficient case management and obstructed processes. Besides, in my country, assistance companies are not widely known. This led me to develop processes that facilitate access to quality, timely, empathetic medical care.
How do you feel the industry has changed since you founded the company?
The changes have been abrupt; however, they are not always carried out in an organised or supervised manner. It is widely known that the healthcare industry is poorly regulated, especially in Latin American countries. This allows for hasty, and even chaotic practices and decisions. For example, in Mexico, the number of third-party administrators (TPAs) increases every year. Despite being an expanding market, it lacks adequate regulations. In Latin America, this sector is not widely known, not even by the authorities. This situation results in insufficient regulation that encourages uncontrolled and risky market dynamics for those who are not familiar with all these aspects. Although it is true that there is growth in this sector, it is crucial to establish adequate regulation to guarantee transparency and balance.
What drew you to the healthcare sphere?
My grandfather, a surgeon, had an enormous influence on my development and career choice. Later, as a physician, I was drawn to healthcare management – a critical but often underappreciated area. Once I understood the importance of administrative and coordination processes to improve the patient experience, I decided to focus my efforts in this direction.
Our goal is to establish a
network that allows us to care
for the right patient at the right
place and time
You work closely with hospitals, doctors, paramedics etc., how do you choose the partners you work with?
I am convinced that clients do not simply acquire a service, it also matters how it is carried out. That is, it is not just about the services themselves, but about the reason and the way in which we offer them. For this reason, at Logimedex we focus on collaborating with suppliers who share our vision and values. Our goal is to establish a network that allows us to care for the right patient at the right place and time. To achieve this, we have a rigorous quality management system that establishes the criteria for a supplier to become part of our network. These criteria are designed to guarantee our clients that our suppliers comply with the legal regulations established as a minimum requirement; in addition, each provider is distinguished by its particular characteristics.
The economic environment is very challenging for the industry currently. How is Logimedex facing such challenges?
Our company is relatively new to the market and, as such, the economic context has been a key factor influencing our future. We focus on a strategy based on planning and anticipation, adopting a conservative stance to mitigate risks. We meticulously take care of every aspect, no matter how small it may seem, and we have a specialised team of financial professionals who support us to maintain a stable economic environment.
What makes Logimedex stand out from the crowd?
I believe that our clients are the ones who can best answer this question. What I can say about this is to thank my team: men and women prepared to approach each case with determination and warmth. Their firmness, experience and dedication turn each challenge into an opportunity for growth, both professionally and personally
