The Dangerous Allure of Aconcagua
Sarah-Michelle Kilduff, Director of Travel Assistance at Redpoint Travel Protection, describes three separate medical evacuations undertaken by her company in the shadow of Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.
Nestled amid the grandeur of the Andes Mountains, Aconcagua stands tall as South America’s highest peak, alluring adventurers from around the globe. However, the rugged terrain and extreme conditions present inherent risks – necessitating swift and efficient medical evacuation services. Redpoint Travel Protection is a steadfast partner in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of climbers who get into difficulties on the mountain.
This case study highlights three successful helicopter evacuations conducted during the recent climbing season, offering a glimpse into the comprehensive support provided by the Redpoint team.
Evacuation 1: High-altitude Pulmonary Edema at Plaza de Mulas Base Camp
Redpoint received an urgent call concerning a Ripcord client experiencing high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) at Plaza de Mulas base camp. Recognising the critical nature of the situation, Redpoint swiftly activated its evacuation protocol. Despite adverse weather conditions, the team coordinated closely with the client, awaiting clearance for evacuation.
Upon transport, the client received immediate medical assessment and care at a facility in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, ensuring comprehensive treatment. Post-discharge, Redpoint maintained regular follow-ups to monitor the client’s recovery progress and extend continued support.
Evacuation 2: High-altitude Cerebral Edema at Plaza de Mulas Base Camp
Another distress call echoed from Aconcagua’s Plaza de Mulas base camp, signalling a client in urgent need due to high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Redpoint promptly activated its evacuation protocol, providing continuous updates to the client and their concerned loved ones.
Collaborating closely with park rangers, the team ensured seamless transportation to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment. Following evacuation, Redpoint remained vigilant, conducting multiple check-ins to monitor the client’s recovery journey and offer ongoing support during their recuperation.
Evacuation 3: Grade 3 Sprain at Plaza Argentina Camp
Amidst the rugged terrain of Aconcagua’s Plaza Argentina camp, a Ripcord client suffered a grade 3 sprain, rendering them immobile. Upon receiving the distress call, Redpoint sprang into action, orchestrating a seamless evacuation process.
From coordinating ground logistics to arranging a private transfer for postevacuation medical assessment, the assistance team left no stone unturned in ensuring the client’s safety. Throughout the evacuation and beyond, Redpoint provided support, guiding the client through the challenges and offering reassurance every step of the way.
