New Zealand tourism reaches major 3.7 million visitor milestone
Surging leisure demand from Australia and China is accelerating the inbound recovery, putting the market on course to reach 3.9 million arrivals by June 2027
New Zealand recorded 3.7 million international visitor arrivals in the year to June 2026, marking a major milestone in its tourism recovery and reaching the target earlier than expected.
Total arrivals rose 8.9% year on year, almost twice the 5% growth recorded a year earlier. Leisure arrivals increased 15.3%, while conference arrivals climbed 16.7%, signalling strengthening demand across key travel segments.
Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive René de Monchy said the result demonstrated the country’s continued appeal.
“A year ago, many commentators expected recovery to take until the second half of 2027. Reaching 3.7 million arrivals ahead of that time frame shows the strength of New Zealand’s appeal and the impact of focused international marketing, aviation connectivity, industry partnerships, and trade activity,” de Monchy said.
Australia remained New Zealand’s dominant source market, generating around 1.59 million arrivals, or 43% of the total. Australian holiday arrivals rose 16%.
China delivered particularly strong growth, with arrivals up around 27% to 315,400 and Chinese holiday visits surging 40%. Australia and China together accounted for more than two-thirds of the overall increase.
The UK remained New Zealand’s largest European market, with 196,500 arrivals, up 4.1%. The US remained the second-largest market overall at 385,500 arrivals, although growth slowed to 1.1%.
Tourism New Zealand is now targeting 3.9 million international arrivals and NZ$14.4 billion (about US$8.4 billion) in visitor spending by June 2027.
Meanwhile, NZ travel insurers face renewed questions over conflict exclusions after the foreign ministry reversed eased travel advice for several Gulf destinations.
