Gen Z drives autumn travel boom with longer, more affordable international trips
Young travellers are taking longer international trips in offbeat destinations, with a focus on affordable luxury experiences
Gen Z are redefining travel patterns this year, with searches for trips up 26% compared with 2024. The younger cohort is opting for longer, international escapes during the off-peak season, seeking affordable luxury and immersive experiences.
A Focal data survey shows over 80% of Gen Z cite affordability as a key factor in their decisions, with 42% believing autumn offers better value. “This surge is likely fuelled by more affordable travel during the shoulder season, making international travel more approachable for younger travellers,” said Airbnb.
Paris tops the list of trending destinations, with younger travellers using the off-peak period to tick off bucket-list cities without overspending. Popular activities include culinary and cultural Airbnb experiences priced under US$100. Other hotspots among Gen Z include Osaka, Dubai, Porto, Cartagena, London, Munich, Mexico City, and Santiago.
Meanwhile, in the US, autumn foliage remains a powerful draw. Vermont leads as the top-rated state for autumn colours based on guest reviews, followed by New Hampshire, New York, Ohio and Minnesota. More than 80% of survey respondents said natural scenery factored into their travel plans.
Beach travel is also extending further into the season. Rather than traditional hotspots, travellers are seeking out “dupes” – emerging destinations that mirror better-known resorts while offering fewer crowds and lower costs. These include Naha in Japan (“Japan’s Hawaii”), Ipojuca in Brazil, Ericeira in Portugal, San Andrés in Colombia, and Praia Grande in Brazil.
According to Airbnb, Gen Z is driving demand for longer, experience-rich and value-focused trips, making this travel season one defined by affordable luxury, cultural immersion and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
IMG also recently shared some of this season’s top destinations and increased spending overall.
