European wildfires trigger mass evacuations as travel disruption intensifies
Thousands of holidaymakers have been displaced as wildfires spread across France, Spain, and Italy, adding pressure on travel assistance providers
More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from southwest France as fast-moving wildfires continue to spread across the Gironde region, in the latest indication of how extreme weather is disrupting travel across Europe during the peak holiday season.
French authorities said around 12,000 people had been evacuated, while a further 8,800 were being moved as a precaution as the fires advanced around Arcachon Bay. Many of those affected were tourists staying at campsites on the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula.
The Gironde prefecture said approximately 3,100 hectares of land had been destroyed, with roads closed and campsites evacuated as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. No injuries have been reported.
The evacuations highlight the growing operational challenges posed by increasingly frequent climate-related events. Large-scale wildfires can lead to trip cancellations, emergency accommodation, transport disruption, and, in some cases, medical assistance or repatriation for affected travellers.
The situation in France follows a series of major wildfires across Southern Europe in recent days.
In Spain, residents have begun returning to their homes after a wildfire near Toledo forced precautionary evacuations and burned around 890 hectares. Although authorities said the fire remained active, its perimeter had stabilised following firefighting efforts.
A separate wildfire in Almería earlier this month killed 13 people – 12 of them foreign nationals – and forced nearly 1,500 people to evacuate.
Meanwhile, in Italy, more than 350 wildfires have been reported across Sicily, including 10 major incidents that prompted precautionary evacuations. A firefighter died after becoming unwell while tackling one of the blazes, with regional authorities paying tribute to his service.
French firefighters also suffered fatalities earlier this week, with two personnel killed while responding to a separate wildfire near Bordeaux Airport.
Climate-related disruption becoming a growing travel risk
The latest incidents add to a summer marked by prolonged heatwaves and extreme record temperatures across much of Europe, increasing the likelihood of travel disruption during one of the busiest periods of the year.
For insurers, wildfires represent an increasingly complex risk, extending beyond immediate property damage to include accommodation disruption, transport delays, emergency assistance, and customer support for travellers displaced at short notice.
The latest evacuations come as Europe continues to experience an exceptionally hot summer. Copernicus data showed June 2026 was the hottest June on record in Western Europe, while scientists have linked the prolonged heat to conditions that increase the risk of large, fast-moving wildfires.
For travel insurers and assistance providers, the trend points to more frequent large-scale disruption affecting holiday destinations, requiring greater operational resilience and faster support for displaced travellers.
