AXA Global Healthcare and Old Mutual partner to drive IPMI growth in Africa
A new partnership model is set to strengthen East Africa’s international private medical insurance market, as AXA Global Healthcare expands its regional presence through strategic collaborations
AXA Global Healthcare has announced a strategic collaboration with Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya, marking a major step in its long-term commitment to Africa. The partnership will be supported by an exclusive distribution deal with Executive Healthcare Solutions (EHS), aimed at accelerating AXA’s growth in the international private medical insurance (IPMI) market across the region.
As of 1 October 2025, all AXA Global Healthcare policies in Kenya will be locally underwritten by Old Mutual. The collaboration combines AXA’s global healthcare expertise with Old Mutual’s strong local presence to deliver internationally benchmarked cover aligned with local regulation.
Karim Idilby, Chief Growth Officer at AXA Health International, said the partnership represented “a major milestone” in AXA’s global growth strategy and long-term commitment to Africa.
Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Managing Director Japheth Ogalloh said the collaboration would “bring trusted local underwriting together with world-class international health coverage”.
To further strengthen its footprint, AXA Global Healthcare has entered an exclusive distribution agreement with EHS. Effective 1 August 2025, the deal includes the renewal-based transfer of EHS’s existing IPMI customer portfolio across multiple African markets, covering both individual and SME clients. EHS will also act as sole distributor of the newly developed Global Executive Health Plan (GEHP), offering regional and global cover designed to maintain continuity of benefits.
Andy O’Cain, Global Head of Distribution at AXA Health International, said the dual collaboration provided “the perfect platform” to become a leading player in East Africa’s IPMI market.
EHS CEO Aly Maherali said the partnership enabled delivery of “solutions supported by a trusted global brand”, meeting the evolving healthcare needs of clients across Africa.
The announcement follows AXA Global Healthcare’s recent market expansion in the United Arab Emirates, reinforcing its growth strategy in key international regions.
Idilby recently spoke to ITIJ about how international private medical insurance must evolve to suit the changing needs of high-net-worth individuals.
