The 26 top destinations for solo travellers, according to experts

Kyrgyzstan has been named the world’s top destination for solo adventure travel in 2026, according to a new global ranking by adventure travel company Much Better Adventures. Italy placed second in the index, followed by Japan in third.

The Solo Travel Index 2026 identifies the 26 best countries for independent travellers seeking adventure abroad. The ranking was compiled by a panel of Much Better Adventures trip designers, who analysed booking trends, traveller feedback, meal costs, visa accessibility, Global Peace Index scores, and the Global Biodiversity Index.

Central Asian nation Kyrgyzstan topped the list this year, overtaking Italy as the leading destination for a micro-expedition. Known for its high mountain passes, alpine lakes, and nomadic culture, the country offers what researchers described as authentic “off-the-grid” experiences alongside affordable meal prices, averaging £4.50 per person.

“Kyrgyzstan mixes wild landscapes with ancient traditions, and simple comforts with big adventures,” said Marta Marinelli, Trip Designer for Much Better Adventures. She added that kayaking on Issyk-Kul Lake, hiking the red-rock formations of Skazka Canyon, and travelling across the steppes made the destination particularly memorable.

Italy ranked second thanks to strong rail connectivity and diverse landscapes, while Japan placed third amid growing traveller interest and a reputation for safety.

Sam Bruce, Co-Founder of Much Better Adventures, said solo travel was evolving. “Solo travel doesn’t always mean travelling alone. Many adventurers are choosing small group trips that combine independence … with the reassurance of expert local guides and like-minded travellers.”
