Our staff are mostly NHS trained and qualified to the highest professional standards with a preferred minimum of three years’ experience with a frontline ambulance service. Our staff are overseen by our Medical Director – a current practicing ITU/Anaesthetist Consultant.

Transfer services

Our speciality is long-distance transfer services. We are experts in UK-wide transfers and also international (Europe-wide) road transfers. We currently average over 350 UK transfers and over 25 international ground ambulance transfers every month. However, as detailed below, we also provide many other services and have equal experience and skills in these other areas. HFA has its main base in Radlett – just north of London on the M25. We have sub-bases in Manchester, Newcastle and Scotland.

Bed administration

HFA also has a Bed Admission Team that arrange bed admissions into UK NHS hospitals. They are staffed by current and former NHS Bed/Site Managers and/or NHS Matrons/Nursing Sisters and currently manage, on average, over 40 admissions per month.

Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services HFA has recently (2024) opened a new separate division for Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services (NEPTS). Our HFPTS division provides support to NHS hospitals and trusts. Currently 35 vehicles operate 24/7 within the Greater London and Southeast England regions. PTS journeys are pick-up/ drop-offs and returns to and from home, care providers and hospitals. We presently undertake over 500 patient journeys each day.

Training

HFAT – Hearts First Ambulance Training – is a separate Qualsafe, UK Resus Council and CPD-registered training academy to provide pre-hospital care training and refresher courses to both HFA staff and external individuals or companies.

Hearts First Ambulance has recently been awarded the highest possible rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC – the UK healthcare regulator) of ‘Outstanding’. We are the only ground ambulance service in the UK to have this rating.

 Issue

In this, our biggest issue ever, our main focus is on artificial intelligence. After recent threats and warnings about the potential dangers of AI and calls for coordinated action to slow the technology's development, we speak to experts about the technology in a three-part special. We look at data-driven risk assessment, underwriting, and portfolio optimisation, which are all being transformed by AI, and ask what insurers and underwriters are doing to get the most out of the technology.
