A luxury treehouse dinner gone wrong
Malteser AeroMedical repatriated a German traveller after a freak accident
For many, travelling the world is the realisation of a lifelong dream. When a Berlin couple set off on a two-month journey across Asia to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, they anticipated an unforgettable adventure filled with new experiences. Their final stop, Phuket, was meant to be the grand finale of their once-in-a-lifetime experience. But what began as a joyous occasion quickly turned into an unimaginable ordeal that would require the expertise of an international aeromedical team to bring them safely home.
What began as a joyous occasion quickly turned into an unimaginable ordeal
An end to the holiday
After weeks of exploring breathtaking landscapes, basking in the sun, and immersing themselves in local cultures, the couple decided to mark the end of their travels with a special dinner. A treehouse restaurant, perched among the towering trees of Phuket’s jungle, seemed like the perfect place for their final evening in Asia. Excited, they made their way up the many steps to the restaurant, pausing to take photographs along the way up to capture their experience. The husband, wanting to strike a perfect pose, leaned casually against the wooden railing, smiling at his wife as she prepared to take the shot. In the blink of an eye, disaster struck. The fragile railing gave way, and he plummeted nearly 10 metres to the ground below.
The wife turned around just in time to see her husband disappear from her sight. Screaming for help, she looked down only to find her husband motionless on the ground after a 10-metre fall. Staff and bystanders immediately sprang into action, calling local emergency services. Within minutes, paramedics arrived and assessed his condition. He was unconscious, suffering from an open fracture in both legs, two broken ankles, and a series of rib fractures. Recognising the severity of his injuries, the emergency team arranged for an urgent airlift to the nearest international hospital.
Every detail had to be considered: the risks associated with long-haul medical transport, the need for pain management, and the logistics of ensuring a seamless repatriation
The injuries
Upon arrival at the local hospital, the medical team wasted no time in preparing him for surgery. The extent of his injuries demanded immediate intervention to stabilise his fractured tibia and fibula, while his respiratory function was carefully monitored due to the rib fractures. As her husband lay in recovery, the wife took swift action. She contacted their travel insurance provider, who quickly connected her with Malteser AeroMedical.
A seamless repatriation
The team at Malteser AeroMedical immediately assessed the situation, coordinating with the hospital’s medical staff to evaluate when the patient would be stable enough to travel. Every detail had to be considered: the risks associated with long-haul medical transport, the need for pain management, and the logistics of ensuring a seamless repatriation. After a thorough assessment, he was declared fit for travel, and arrangements for an air ambulance to Germany were set into motion.
Days later, the Malteser AeroMedical team arrived in Thailand, where they met the patient and his deeply relieved wife. The team ensured that all necessary medical equipment was in place and the patient’s condition did allow him to be transported back. On the day of departure, they closely monitored the patient’s vitals, adjusting his pain management plan to ensure he would remain stable and comfortable throughout the long flight back to Berlin.
The trip home was long but smooth and every phase of the journey – the departure, the hours in the air, and the final approach to Berlin – was carefully managed, ensuring that the patient’s condition remained stable. Upon landing in Berlin, the Malteser AeroMedical team accompanied the patient directly to a local hospital, where he was admitted for further treatment and rehabilitation.
For the couple, the experience was both harrowing and eye-opening. What had been planned as a joyful anniversary celebration had turned into an ordeal that tested their resilience. Yet, through the professionalism and swift intervention of Malteser AeroMedical – both on the ground and in the air – the couple found solace in knowing that, even in the face of disaster, they were not alone.
