Leveraging the effective use of local resources ensures optimal outcome

Medicine does not unfold solely within operating rooms and hospital wards. Often, it plays out on uncharted routes, at the margins of the healthcare map, and in the ability to build real-time networks that deliver care where it seems impossible.

This case exemplifies both the complexity – and feasibility – of coordinating specialised neurosurgical care and international repatriation from a country facing structural limitations, putting inter-institutional coordination and on-the-ground medical logistics to the test.

A complex head injury case

At the end of March, we were called to intervene in a high-complexity case involving a patient diagnosed with a right-sided subdural haematoma with mass effect and signs of rebleeding, who was initially hospitalised at a local clinic in Sarteneja, Belize.
