Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip, sheds light on the importance of traveller education in making informed insurance decisions

Why is it crucial for travellers to educate themselves about travel insurance before purchasing a policy?

Travel insurance is designed to protect travellers from unforeseen events that can disrupt their trips, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. However, not all policies are created equal, and coverage can vary significantly between providers. Without a clear understanding of what a policy covers (and just as importantly, what it doesn’t) travellers could find themselves unprotected when they need it the most.

Can you provide an example where a lack of understanding led to issues for travellers?

Consider a traveller who assumes their policy covers trip cancellations for any reason. If they decide to cancel their trip due to a non-covered reason, such as a change of mind, they might be surprised to find that their standard policy doesn't reimburse them – that is what cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage is for, an optional upgrade. This misunderstanding can lead to significant financial loss and frustration.

How does InsureMyTrip assist travellers in understanding their insurance options?

At InsureMyTrip we prioritise transparency and education. Our platform allows travellers to compare policies from various providers side by side, highlighting differences in coverage, exclusions, and benefits. Additionally, we offer resources like the ‘Quick Guide to Travel Insurance’, which breaks down complex insurance jargon into understandable terms, helping travellers make informed decisions. Travellers can also call, chat or email one of our licensed travel insurance agents.

Are there specific data points that highlight the importance of traveller education in insurance?

Absolutely. Our data indicates that travellers who utilise our educational resources are far more likely to choose policies that align with their specific needs, leading to higher satisfaction rates and fewer denied claims. This underscores the value of understanding policy details before purchasing.

What are some common misconceptions travellers have about travel insurance?

A prevalent misconception is that all travel insurance policies are the same, leading travellers to opt for the cheapest option without considering coverage specifics. Another is the belief that travel insurance covers any cancellation reason, whereas most standard policies cover specific unforeseen events. Additionally, some travellers assume their domestic health insurance provides comprehensive international coverage, which is rarely the case. A recent survey conducted by InsureMyTrip reveals a critical gap in travel preparedness among international travellers especially. While 79% of travellers express concern about getting sick or injured while travelling abroad, only 41% know whether their domestic health insurance provides coverage outside their home country.

There’s a heightened awareness of the need for coverage, but also more complexity in policy terms and conditions

How can travellers determine the appropriate coverage for their trips?

Travellers should start by assessing the potential risks associated with their destination and activities. For instance, a trip to a remote area might necessitate robust medical evacuation coverage. Using tools like our comparison platform allows travellers to filter policies based on specific needs, ensuring they select coverage that offers adequate protection.

What role does InsureMyTrip play in simplifying the complexities of travel insurance for consumers?

We act as a bridge between travellers and insurance providers, demystifying the complexities of travel insurance. Our platform offers user-friendly comparison tools, educational resources, and access to licensed insurance agents who can answer specific questions. This comprehensive approach empowers travellers to make choices with confidence.

How has the travel insurance industry evolved in recent years, and what does that mean for traveller education?

The industry has seen significant changes, especially in light of global events like the Covid-19 pandemic. There’s a heightened awareness of the need for coverage, but also more complexity in policy terms and conditions. This evolution makes traveller education more critical than ever, as understanding the fine print can significantly impact the effectiveness of the coverage.

Can you share a success story where proper education led to a positive outcome for a traveller?

We recently had a traveller who used our platform to understand the nuances of CFAR coverage. They opted for this add-on, and when an unexpected work commitment arose, they could cancel their trip and recover a significant portion of their prepaid expenses. Their proactive approach to understanding their policy options led to a favourable outcome.

What final advice do you have for travellers regarding travel insurance and the importance of education?

Investing time in understanding travel insurance is as crucial as planning the trip itself. By educating themselves, travellers can ensure they’re adequately protected against unforeseen events, making their journeys more secure and enjoyable. We are always looking to expand our tools and resources necessary to support this educational journey.
