Emergency medical and travel assistance have long been a valuable component of comprehensive US travel insurance policies. While many US travellers associate travel insurance with financial protection for trip cancellations, the added value of a policy often becomes clear when unexpected, often expensive, emergencies occur mid-trip – whether a medical crisis, logistical disruption or security threat.

Over the years, emergency assistance services have evolved significantly, shifting from basic medical referrals and coordination to a highly specialised, technology-driven global support system. From multilingual medical guidance to artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced crisis response, emergency travel assistance continues to expand its capabilities to meet the demands of an increasingly unpredictable travel landscape.

The core role of emergency travel assistance

At its foundation, emergency travel assistance services provide travellers with 24/7 global support, helping them navigate foreign healthcare systems, coordinate emergency evacuations, rebook disrupted travel plans, and receive 
crisis assistance when needed. The primary benefits include:

  • Medical coordination and evacuation: identifying the nearest qualified medical facility, coordinating emergency transportation and overseeing medical treatment abroad
  • 24/7 multilingual support: facilitating communication between travellers and local hospitals, authorities or service providers in their native language
  • Trip disruption assistance: assisting travellers in rebooking cancelled flights, securing last-minute accommodation and finding alternative transportation
  • Lost document and legal assistance: helping travellers replace lost passports, obtain emergency visas or access legal resources abroad.

According to USTIA data, there was an 86% increase in medical-only travel insurance plan purchases in 2022 compared with pre-pandemic levels in 2019. While full comprehensive travel insurance plans still account for more than 88% of total travel insurance plans purchased, based on 2022 data, the multi-year growth of medical-only plans highlights the increasing awareness and demand for specialised emergency medical services while travelling.

How emergency medical assistance has evolved over the years

From manual support to specialised expertise

A decade ago, emergency medical assistance was largely manual, often handled by small teams of medical professionals who coordinated care and evacuations on a case-by-case basis. Today, assistance providers have grown into highly specialised networks, leveraging technology to improve efficiency and expand capabilities.

Key advancements include:

  • Dedicated air ambulance services and specialised medical transport teams
  • Global provider networks connecting travellers with pre-vetted hospitals 
    and specialists
  • Telemedicine and digital health consultations, allowing travellers to access remote medical guidance before seeking in-person treatment.

The impact of global crises: 9/11, Covid-19 and natural disasters

The evolution of emergency assistance has been shaped by major global events, prompting insurers and assistance providers to adapt to new risks and traveller needs.

  • Post-9/11: before 9/11, many travel insurance policies included emergency medical assistance as part of a comprehensive plan, but only some offered emergency travel assistance, and others offered it as an optional add-on rather than a standard inclusion. The widespread stoppage of travel caused by the attacks revealed the necessity of comprehensive travel coordination services. Today, emergency travel assistance is a core component of most US travel insurance policies
  • Covid-19: the pandemic introduced new medical and logistical challenges, such as quarantine accommodation, rebooking stranded travellers and the transport of Covid-positive individuals. Providers were forced to develop new protocols for contagious disease evacuations and pandemic-related disruptions. The surge in medical-only travel insurance sales following the pandemic reflects a heightened awareness of the need for specialised emergency medical coverage
  • Rising natural disasters: as extreme weather events become more frequent, emergency assistance can now play a vital role in helping travellers navigate flight cancellations, mandatory evacuations and unexpected disruptions due to hurricanes, wildfires and floods.

  • Mobile assistance apps give travellers real-time access to medical consultations, security alerts and emergency contacts
  • Instant digital payments enable travellers to secure medical treatment without upfront costs, reducing financial burdens in emergency situations
  • AI-driven risk assessments help travellers avoid dangerous areas by providing real-time geopolitical updates.

While automation improves efficiency, industry leaders emphasise that human-led emergency response remains critical, especially in complex medical or security situations, where AI alone is insufficient. 

Multilingual support: a crucial component of assistance services

For travellers facing medical emergencies or legal issues, or needing emergency travel arrangements in foreign countries, language barriers can create significant challenges. Multilingual support is now a standard feature of emergency travel assistance, ensuring travellers can communicate effectively with doctors and hospitals, as well as local authorities and travel consultants.

Assistance providers must balance technological advancements with human expertise to ensure travellers receive personalised and effective support

Alongside human-operated multilingual helplines, advancements in AI-powered translation tools and telehealth services have enhanced accessibility, allowing faster and more accurate communication in high-stress situations.

Real-world impact: assistance services in action

The true value of emergency travel assistance is best demonstrated through real-world scenarios where travellers needed immediate intervention.

  • Medical crisis in remote locations: a traveller on safari in Africa suffered a serious leg fracture after an accident with an elephant. Emergency assistance services coordinated immediate medical care, arranged transport to a specialised hospital, and flew a family member to their bedside
  • Evacuations during natural disasters: a couple travelling to Puerto Rico for their wedding were stranded in New York due to a hurricane. Their travel assistance provider arranged emergency accommodation, coordinated a legal officiant, and ensured their wedding went ahead despite the disruption
  • Lost or overbooked accommodation: a traveller arrived at their hotel in Europe, only to find it was overbooked. Assistance services helped secure new accommodation nearby without additional financial burden.

These examples illustrate how emergency assistance goes beyond medical care, encompassing logistical problem-solving and crisis response to help travellers navigate disruptions.

Challenges and future trends in emergency assistance

Despite significant advancements, emergency travel assistance services face several key challenges and emerging trends. One of the most notable shifts is evolving traveller expectations, particularly among younger generations like Gen Z. These travellers prefer digital-first solutions, favouring chat-based assistance, mobile apps and automated responses over traditional phone calls. Assistance providers must balance technological advancements with human expertise to ensure travellers receive personalised and effective support, especially in high-stress situations.

Another significant trend is the shift towards standalone medical and evacuation plans. The 86% increase in medical-only travel insurance plans since 2019 highlights a growing consumer demand for specialised emergency medical coverage. This trend has largely been driven by Covid-19, which underscored the gaps in traditional health insurance when travelling abroad. While full comprehensive travel insurance plans still account for the majority of policies sold, both types of coverage emphasise the increasing importance of emergency medical coverage and assistance services. 

The role of artificial intelligence in assistance services is also expanding. AI is improving efficiency by streamlining processes such as claims handling, medical triage and risk assessment, but it remains a tool rather than a full replacement for human-led assistance. While automation can accelerate response times and enhance decision-making, human oversight remains essential, particularly in complex medical emergencies or crisis situations, which require nuanced judgment and real-time coordination.

As emergency travel assistance continues to evolve, providers must navigate these changing dynamics.

The future of emergency travel assistance

Emergency assistance services – covering both medical and logistical support – are now a core component of US travel insurance policies, ensuring travellers have access to the resources they need in an emergency. Emergency medical assistance has historically been included in these plans to coordinate medical care, evacuations and treatment abroad. Following 9/11, emergency travel assistance became a staple within comprehensive policies. Today, both medical and travel-related assistance services have become standard features across different types of travel insurance plans.

From coordinating lifesaving medical evacuations to helping stranded travellers secure last-minute accommodations, assistance services continue to adapt and expand in response to evolving risks and traveller expectations.

As USTIA continues to track trends and innovations in US travel insurance, the role of emergency assistance will only grow in importance, ensuring travellers have reliable, responsive and specialised support – no matter where their journey takes them.
