Industry Voice: Building and maintaining global medical networks
Lara Helmi, Managing Director of CONNEX Assistance, spoke to ITIJ about the company’s successes and challenges when selecting and maintaining medical providers
In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of medical assistance companies has never been more vital. As global travel grows in volume and complexity, travellers and expatriates rely on the assurance that, in times of medical emergencies, the support they receive from their organisations and insurers is prompt, reliable, and efficient. At the core of this lies a robust global network of medical assistance companies and their well-maintained network of medical service providers.
Here we explore how we select and maintain medical providers, the challenges we face in doing so.
Selecting providers: a balance of quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
The foundation of any exceptional medical network is the providers themselves. At CONNEX Assistance we adhere to the following standards when selecting hospitals, clinics, and healthcare professionals to join our network:
- Quality of care: every provider undergoes a thorough vetting process to assess the quality of their services. This includes an evaluation of medical credentials, facility accreditation, and adherence to international standards of care. Regular site visits further allow us to assess infrastructure, hygiene, and levels of patient satisfaction
- Geographic reach: a provider network must have depth and breadth. In populous urban centres, we seek partnerships with multiple providers to offer our clients choice and flexibility. In remote areas, where options are limited, we prioritise providers with proven track records of reliability under challenging conditions. We also ensure we have logistical solutions in place to bridge any gaps we may face in these remote areas
- Cost transparency: maintaining cost-effectiveness without compromising care is a delicate balance. By negotiating rates directly with providers and leveraging the volume of patients we direct to them, we ensure transparent pricing structures that benefit both our clients and their insured members
- Language and cultural sensitivity: in a diverse region like the Middle East and Africa (MEA), we prioritise providers who demonstrate cultural awareness, have bilingual staff and are used to dealing with the unique challenges faced when working with diverse nationalities and international patients. This ensures that patients feel understood and results in a more positive healthcare journey
- Comprehensive network analysis: beyond vetting, we conduct structured detailed analyses of potential providers, evaluating not just quality and cost but also geographical gaps and specific client needs that can develop over time. This ensures that our network is not only robust but also strategically aligned with the diverse requirements of our global clients.
In markets such as Saudi Arabia, where regulatory oversight is evolving rapidly, local expertise and on-the-ground presence are invaluable
Building networks in challenging markets
Operating across MEA and other emerging markets presents unique challenges. Healthcare infrastructure varies widely, and regulations can be complex. However, these challenges offer the chance to turn obstacles into opportunities to create tailored solutions. Here are some of the key areas to address:
- Regulatory navigation: every country has its own healthcare regulations, licensing requirements, and insurance frameworks. In markets such as Saudi Arabia, where regulatory oversight is evolving rapidly, local expertise and on-the-ground presence are invaluable. With our Riyadh office, we are well positioned to stay ahead of regulatory changes, ensuring compliance while safeguarding patient care
- Provider relationships: establishing trust with providers is key to building a sustainable network. We emphasise collaboration over transactional relationships, fostering long-term partnerships based on mutual respect and shared goals
- Crisis readiness: in volatile regions or during public health crises, the reliability of a medical network is put to the test. Whether dealing with a natural disaster, a pandemic, or geopolitical instability, CONNEX Assistance’s proactive approach to risk management ensures continuity of care for patients and clients
- Tailored network solutions: whether we are positioning providers for specialised medical services in a specific geographical area, recognising that one size does not fit all, we work to create customised solutions for unique client needs.
We offer training programmes to our healthcare professionals and operational staff so that they are constantly informed of local developments as well as international best practices for our network
Maintaining excellence: regular audits and continuous improvement
Building a medical network is only half the equation. Maintaining its quality and reliability and continuously enhancing it over time requires constant work:
- Provider audits: regular audits are conducted to verify that providers continue to meet our standards. These audits assess everything from clinical outcomes to patient feedback and financial integrity
- Technology integration: advanced data analytics and digital tools allow us to monitor provider performance. By leveraging technology, we can identify trends, address inefficiencies, and make informed decisions about network enhancements
- Client feedback loop: we actively seek and listen to feedback from our clients and their insured members. This real-world input helps us refine our network, address gaps, and respond to evolving needs, ensuring more positive outcomes
- Training and development: we offer training programmes to our healthcare professionals and operational staff so that they are constantly informed of local developments as well as international best practices for our network. This commitment to internal knowledge sharing and professional development benefits our staff network, and ultimately the patients
- Cybersecurity awareness: ensuring the security of sensitive healthcare data is a critical priority. We incorporate robust cybersecurity measures, such as encryption and secure access controls, to protect patient information. Additionally, we foster a culture of awareness, training, audited and tested IT processes and proactive management to mitigate risks.
Focus on Saudi Arabia: enhancing coverage and accessibility
Since opening our operational office in Saudi Arabia in 2003, we have worked to expand the geographical coverage of our medical network to adapt to the dynamic and fast-paced changes happening in the Kingdom. As the number of visitors to Saudi Arabia has exploded over the past few years, we have significantly increased the number of facilities capable of managing international patients across this vast Kingdom. This includes building relationships with both private and governmental hospitals, the latter of which can sometimes present challenges in terms of communication and process navigation.
The Kingdom’s tourism sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by Vision 2030. This presents immense opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the rapidly growing healthcare sector as well. By opening an office in Riyadh, we are ensuring that we are at the forefront of these changes. Our local team, combined with our regional and global medical expertise, allows us to offer our services to clients operating in or expanding into the entire region.
Conclusion
Building and maintaining a global medical provider network is an intricate process requiring local expertise, a deep knowledge of medical practices, and data-driven processes. At CONNEX Assistance we prioritise best practices, regional nuances, and a proactive approach to continuously enhancing our services.
