Tom Elliott, Business Development Manager, Americas at AP Companies, discusses brokers’ evolving needs, the demand for cost transparency and integrated services, and the value of collaboration in strengthening client relationships

As brokers face increasing pressure to differentiate their international health and assistance offerings, what are they looking for most from assistance partners today, and how is AP Companies responding to those needs?

Brokers are looking for more than just network access. Their clients want solutions that help improve the employee experience while providing greater visibility and control over healthcare costs.

We’re also seeing growing interest, particularly in the US, from self-funded employers that want more transparency and proactive management of international healthcare spend. Brokers need partners who can help address those concerns while still delivering high-quality support for globally mobile employees.

At AP Companies, we combine global provider access with medical assistance, claims administration, healthcare navigation, and healthcare cost containment. Because we actively coordinate care and manage medical cases every day, we’re able to help brokers offer practical solutions that improve access to care while helping employers better manage costs. That combination of service, operational expertise, and cost control is becoming increasingly important in today’s market.

What are the biggest challenges brokers encounter when placing international health and assistance solutions for globally mobile clients, and how can you help?

Complexity is probably the biggest challenge. Employers may have expatriates, frequent business travellers, remote workers, and international project teams, often spread across multiple regions with very different healthcare systems.

Brokers need solutions that provide a consistent member experience while balancing quality, accessibility, and cost. For self-funded employers, there is the added challenge of understanding utilisation patterns and controlling healthcare spending across international markets.

ternational markets. Our role is to simplify that process. AP Companies brings together medical assistance, provider access, claims administration, care coordination, and healthcare cost management into a single solution. Rather than managing multiple vendors, brokers can work with one partner that supports the entire member journey. This creates a more streamlined experience for both brokers and their clients while reducing administrative burden and improving oversight.

AP Companies continues to expand its presence in the US. How does this growth benefit brokers, and what opportunities does it create for clients?

The US market represents a significant opportunity because employers are increasingly focused on healthcare costs and looking for innovative ways to support globally mobile employees.

As we expand our US presence, brokers gain access to a partner that combines extensive global infrastructure with stronger local engagement. I’m seeing increasing interest from consultants and employers that want greater flexibility, transparency, and control over their international healthcare programmes.

For self-funded employers in particular, our global TPA capabilities provide opportunities to better manage international healthcare costs while maintaining high service standards for employees. Combined with our provider network, medical assistance, and cost containment expertise, we can help employers take a more strategic approach to supporting their international workforce.

Strong partnerships are built on trust, communication, and results. What does AP Companies do differently to support brokers and help them strengthen relationships with their clients over the long term?

The most successful partnerships are collaborative rather than transactional. We work closely with brokers to understand their clients’ goals and design solutions that fit their specific needs rather than offering a one-sizefits-all approach.

What differentiates us is our operational involvement. We are engaged every day in coordinating care, managing claims, controlling costs, and supporting members around the world. This gives brokers confidence that their clients are backed by an experienced team with real-world healthcare expertise.

We also place great emphasis on communication, transparency, and responsiveness. By delivering consistent service, actionable reporting, and measurable outcomes, we help brokers strengthen client relationships, improve retention, and position themselves as trusted advisers in an increasingly complex global healthcare environment.
