New Frontier Group (NFG) explains how it ensured a timely medical evacuation and cost-effective care for a patient on a cruise ship

Clients who work with NFG understand that we don’t just measure success in dollars saved but in lives protected. Our focus is always on securing the lowest cost of care with the best outcome, and that includes our attention to every detail related to member care.

For example, when an urgent medical situation unfolded aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean, NFG was called upon to facilitate a complex, time-sensitive medical evacuation.

The challenge wasn’t just about securing transport and treatment – it was about ensuring that the patient received timely, high-quality care without unnecessary delays or excessive financial burden.

A race against time

A patient on board a cruise ship required immediate evacuation due to a sudden and serious health issue. When the emergency occurred, the ship was set to sail in just five hours. This made it imperative that we manage the evacuation prior to the set sail schedule.

• The patient needed urgent care that exceeded the capabilities of the ship’s medical facilities

• A swift yet cost-effective medical evacuation had to be arranged

• The ship’s scheduled departure required precise coordination

• The designated hospital had to be prepared for the patient’s arrival and treatment; we also had to assure that the patient had a receiving doctor assigned.

The solution – leveraging NFG expertise and relationships

Understanding that every second counted, NFG activated its global network of medical transport providers and hospital partners. The actions our team focused on included:

• Rapidly sourced an air ambulance from a nearby island, ensuring minimal flight time and rapid deployment

• Secured a local hospital for immediate stabilisation, ensuring the patient had proper care while awaiting air evacuation

• Coordinated with a US hospital to ensure a seamless transfer upon arrival, avoiding unnecessary delays in treatment

• Worked in tandem with the cruise line to ensure the patient’s evacuation was completed before the ship’s departure.

The outcome – a human-centred success story

Thanks to NFG’s proactive care management approach, strong industry relationships, and provider communication, the patient was evacuated safely, received the necessary medical care, and avoided prolonged suffering at sea. The cruise line departed on schedule, and the entire process was handled with efficiency, care, and cost-consciousness. NFG’s focus on expedited treatment and management of every detail led to the patient’s strong and swift recovery.

The human side of cost containment

This case exemplifies how medical cost containment is about more than just financial savings – it’s about delivering care with compassion, ensuring timely interventions, and reducing unnecessary complexities for patients and providers alike.

By acting swiftly, NFG not only mitigated potential financial risks but also upheld the core principle that every patient deserves access to high-quality care, no matter where they are in the world. This is the power of human-centred cost containment: balancing financial efficiency with the urgency and dignity of patient care.
