World’s busiest airports 2025: Atlanta tops passenger traffic as global aviation rebounds
Latest ACI data underscores how post-pandemic demand, geopolitical pressures, and capacity constraints are reshaping global airport rankings and aviation growth
Airports Council International (ACI) World has released its 2025 rankings of the world’s busiest airports, highlighting continued recovery and shifting dynamics across global aviation.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its position as the busiest airport for total passengers, handling 106.3 million travellers. Dubai International Airport ranked second with 95.2 million, followed by Tokyo Haneda Airport with 91.7 million. Meanwhile, Chicago O’Hare International Airport led globally in aircraft movements.
Global passenger traffic reached an estimated 9.8 billion in 2025, up 3.6% year on year and 7.3% above 2019 levels. The top 10 airports accounted for 9% of total traffic, with Asia-Pacific hubs showing strong recovery. Shanghai Pudong climbed to fifth place, while Guangzhou Baiyun rebounded to ninth.
ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci said: “We congratulate the world’s busiest airports for managing growing air travel demand amid increasing operational complexity… These hubs keep people and goods moving.”
International passenger numbers rose to four billion (+5.9% versus 2024), led by Dubai, London Heathrow, and Incheon. Air cargo volumes increased 2.9% to 128.9 million tonnes, with Hong Kong, Shanghai Pudong, and Anchorage leading.
Despite growth, infrastructure constraints, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain shifts continue to shape global aviation trends.
