Wayfairer Travel suspends services as customer protection arrangements activated
Customers face different routes to recover holiday costs as the tailor-made tour operator moves towards administration
UK tour operator Wayfairer Travel has suspended all services and is taking steps to appoint an administrator, prompting financial protection arrangements for affected customers.
The company, founded in 2012, specialised in tailor-made holidays to destinations including the Maldives, Japan, Peru, and Egypt.
The Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust (ABTOT) said it had been informed that Wayfairer was unable to continue trading and was putting arrangements in place to support eligible UK customers.
Travellers with holidays booked through Wayfairer for departure on or before 30 September 2026 have been advised not to travel. Customers due to depart after that date have been asked to await further information unless contacted directly.
Wayfairer said it had suspended services “until further notice” while it sought accounting and legal advice.
“We are truly sorry for the concern and uncertainty caused by the current situation,” the company said.
The suspension highlights the different financial protection mechanisms that can apply when a travel business fails, depending on a customer’s residence, booking arrangements, and method of payment.
According to information issued following the suspension, affected UK customers holding an Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL) Certificate have been directed to contact ABTOT. UK residents without an ATOL Certificate have been advised to first seek reimbursement through their debit or credit card provider.
Where a card claim is rejected, customers have been told to obtain a final written decision before pursuing a claim through ABTOT’s arrangements.
The position is different for customers living outside the UK. ABTOT said the protection put in place in relation to Wayfairer did not extend to bookings made by non-UK residents, who have instead been advised to approach their card provider, travel insurer or booking agent.
The disruption comes amid a series of failures in the UK travel sector during 2026, with a number of tour operators, agencies, and airlines entering administration or liquidation.
Frasers Travel and Golf Villa Rentals both stopped trading last month, according to the travel trade association ABTA.
Travel company failures can create complex claims journeys where statutory or bonding arrangements, card protections, and insurance potentially overlap.
Establishing which protection mechanism should respond first can vary according to the type of booking and the traveller’s circumstances.
Wayfairer said it would provide further information once it had received appropriate professional advice.
