US winter storm disrupts thousands of flights
The eastern US has seen heavy snowfall, as well as power grid failure
A winter storm has caused significant flight disruption across the US, with approximately 6,000 domestic and international flights cancelled on Monday 26 January, and more than 7,000 delayed, according to data from FlightAware.
The website also reported that the storm had caused 11,000 flights to be cancelled over the preceding weekend.
The storm, which has caused disruption as far afield as Texas and Maine, has led to some areas of the northeast US being buried under 50.8cm of snow.
Approximately half a million users were left without power in the early hours of 27 January, with Tennessee being the worst affected state.
As of the evening of 26 January, at least 20 deaths have been linked to cold temperatures and heavy snowfall.
Further disruption occurred in Canada, with Toronto Pearson Airport receiving around 46cm of snowfall on 25 January.
Snow-related disruption also stranded a number of tourists at Kittila Airport in Finland earlier this month.
