The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck the southern Philippines continues to rise as hundreds of aftershocks complicate rescue and recovery efforts across Mindanao, authorities said.
Officials have reported at least 40 fatalities and 487 injuries at the time of writing, following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which hit on Monday and caused extensive damage to homes, schools, transport links, and communications infrastructure.
Emergency responders warned that casualty figures could increase further as access improved to some of the worst-affected areas.
The scale of the disaster became clearer as search and rescue teams reached remote coastal communities and towns across Mindanao, where collapsed buildings, landslides, and damaged roads had hindered relief operations.
Large areas of the island remained without electricity or telecommunications services, while officials estimated that nearly 2,000 homes = had sustained damage.
The earthquake, which originated along the Cotabato Trench off the southern coast of the Philippines, also triggered tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific, including Indonesia and Japan, prompting tens of thousands of people to evacuate coastal areas.
Government agencies mobilised emergency resources to support affected communities, with senior health and transport officials deployed to oversee response efforts. However, continued aftershocks have posed challenges for both rescue workers and healthcare providers treating the injured.
Access remains particularly difficult in some areas of Davao Occidental province, where landslides have blocked key transport routes. Local officials said relief supplies were being flown into isolated communities after roads became impassable.
The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the world’s most seismically active countries. The Cotabato Trench has previously generated major earthquakes, including a 1976 event that triggered a deadly tsunami, killing thousands.
Travel insurance policies may have provided cover for certain disruption-related costs, although policy terms vary significantly and experts generally advise travellers to review wording carefully before cancelling or amending plans, particularly in relation to trip disruption and delay provisions.
For those already overseas, assistance providers often work with insurers to support affected policyholders where accommodation or return travel arrangements have been disrupted, with cover sometimes extending to additional costs incurred due to extended stays.
Industry guidance also routinely cautions that travelling against official government travel advice can affect the validity of insurance cover, underscoring the importance of monitoring official updates before and during travel.
