UAE soon to provide health insurance with tourist visas
The new project will enable travellers to the UAE to buy a health insurance policy when they apply for a permit through the ICP
Tourists will soon be able to obtain United Arab Emirates (UAE) health insurance with their visa application, under a new project announced last week.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) told the Khaleej Times that the health insurance for tourist visas is among its “transformative projects”.
In a bid to provide health cover to those in an emergency, the new system will automate the initial process of acquiring health insurance through a digital platform and “manage the pricing and issuance” of packages from all key insurance companies in the UAE.
Speaking to the Khaleej Times, Ramzi Ghurani, Managing Partner at Petra Insurance Brokers, said: “Having insurance cover for all travellers is an assurance that they will be covered for their hospitalisation in case of an unexpected medical emergency. This also ensures the government and private hospitals in the country that they don’t have to foot the bill for an emergency for visitors.
“This is especially great for those travellers who don’t know much about health insurance when travelling. It is surprising how many people don’t know about it and don’t take insurance when travelling. However, those who are more aware should check what the insurance covers. People who would like a more comprehensive medical cover might need to top up with their own private insurance to make sure they are fully protected in the case of an emergency.”
The new automated system will enable visitors to choose among a range of options from different insurance providers, ensuring that the needs of their travel are met.
The UAE Cabinet recently extended its compulsory employer-funded health insurance beyond Abu Dhabi and Dubai to cover the entire UAE.
