A third of travellers want Covid-19 cover according to Squaremouth
US residents are eager to resume travelling; however, concerns about the coronavirus are top of mind
Data from US travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth shows that since the pandemic began, one-third of travellers searching for travel insurance want protection for Covid-19.
Providers offering this coverage are in high demand, as Squaremouth reports a shift in top travel insurance providers to favour those offering Covid-19 coverage.
These travel insurance providers offer policies that include trip cancellation, emergency medical and medical evacuation coverage in the event a traveller, or their family, contracts coronavirus before or during their trip.
The top selling providers offer Cancel for Any Reason
The top three providers, Seven Corners, Trawick International and Tin Leg, also offer the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade, which allows travellers to cancel their trip for any reason two days prior to departure. Travellers who cancel are eligible to receive 75-per-cent reimbursement of their trip cost instead of relying on vouchers or credits from the travel supplier.
This extensive cancellation coverage is also top of mind for travellers following the pandemic, as 22 per cent of all policies purchased from Squaremouth include Cancel for Any Reason coverage, a 524-per-cent increase from last year.
In September, Squaremouth data showed Americans have a pent-up desire to travel abroad in the new year. According to data based on all travel insurance policies purchased through Squaremouth’s website between 12 March and 15 August, a majority of Americans have planned international trips for the beginning of 2021. International destinations account for 86 per cent of all planned trips in January and February 2021 – and about 65 per cent of all trips booked this year for 2021, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, are to international destinations.
