Third malaria death reported in Frankfurt airport-linked outbreak

German health authorities are investigating an unusual cluster of locally acquired malaria cases linked to the area around a major European aviation hub

A third person has died from malaria in an unusual outbreak linked to the area around Frankfurt Airport, as German health authorities investigate how the mosquito-borne disease was transmitted locally.

Frankfurt city officials said the latest death involved one of two infected residents of the Schwanheim district, near the airport. The patient died while receiving treatment at Frankfurt University Hospital.

Both residents were infected with Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the most severe form of malaria, despite neither having travelled to a malaria-endemic region or worked at Frankfurt Airport.

The latest case follows two deaths among people who worked at the airport. Frankfurt authorities said on 27 August that another four people had recovered after contracting malaria.

The circumstances surrounding the infections remain under investigation. Malaria is transmitted between humans through certain species of mosquito and cannot pass directly from one person to another.

Mosquitoes caught in traps at Frankfurt Airport during July and August have been sent to a laboratory in Antwerp, Belgium, for analysis, although results have not yet been released.

Frankfurt Airport’s role as a major international aviation hub brings an additional travel-health dimension to the investigation.

The outbreak underlines the importance of monitoring emerging health risks beyond established endemic regions, particularly where unusual clusters could affect medical advice, case management or assessments of appropriate local care.

German authorities have not yet identified the source of the outbreak, and investigations into the mosquitoes collected around the airport are continuing.

As global outbreaks spread across regions in 2026, experts stress proactive vaccination, prevention, and monitoring for all travellers.
