Storm Adam floods Valencia, disrupting travel and prompting mass rescues
Severe rainfall has left roads impassable, forced evacuations from tourist accommodation, and complicated access to communities along Spain’s Mediterranean coast
Severe flooding caused by Storm Adam has disrupted travel across parts of Spain’s Valencia region, with emergency services rescuing hundreds of stranded people and evacuating guests from a coastal campsite.
Eleven helicopters were deployed around Oliva and Pego on Monday 19 October, rescuing 280 people after floodwaters cut off road access to affected communities, according to local media reports.
Rescue crews evacuated people from rooftops and other elevated locations, including several children and a baby, following repeated calls to emergency services.
The disruption extended to tourist accommodation, with 30 people evacuated from the Eurocamping Oliva campsite. Local authorities opened a municipal shelter to accommodate those displaced by the flooding.
More than 400mm of rainfall was reported around Oliva, causing rivers to overflow, flooding residential areas, and leaving vehicles submerged. Authorities urged people to remain indoors and seek higher ground where necessary.
Spain's maritime rescue coordination centre in Valencia coordinated 15 operations at the request of regional authorities, while police and other emergency personnel supported evacuations on the ground.
The flooding presents potential challenges for travel insurers and assistance providers, particularly where road closures prevent access to accommodation, medical facilities, or onward transport.
Disruption to travel arrangements may also lead to enquiries about cancellation, curtailment, or additional accommodation costs, although eligibility for reimbursement will depend on individual policy terms and the circumstances of each claim.
The scale of any travel insurance losses or requests for international assistance arising from the flooding has not yet been established.
