Protestors in Barcelona target tourists with water guns
Thousands of anti-tourism demonstrators marched through the city at the weekend and targeted diners with water pistols
Over 3,000 people have demonstrated in Barcelona this weekend to protest against the rising cost of housing and overtourism. Videos show protestors shouting at diners while spraying them with water and chanting “Tourists go home”.
Tourists were also targeted at their hotels, where protestors taped up doorways to prevent guests from entering or leaving.
In addition to the declining availability of affordable housing, the protestors are also concerned about overcrowding and high prices, which they feel are a result of increased tourism.
The mayor of Barcelona has pledged to eliminate short-term tourist lets in the city within five years.
Many cities now impose tourist taxes on visitors.
