Operational flight cancellations expose growing travel insurance protection gap

A recent case from New Zealand has highlighted a recurring challenge for travel insurers and assistance providers: travellers often assume travel insurance will cover the additional cost of replacement flights following an airline cancellation, when policy wordings may exclude such events.

According to New Zealand’s Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO), a family returning home from the UK was forced to purchase significantly more expensive replacement tickets after their scheduled flight was cancelled for “operational requirements”. While the airline refunded the original fare, the family sought to recover the additional cost through their travel insurance policy. The claim was declined because the policy excluded cancellations arising from airline operational decisions, except in specific circumstances such as mechanical failure or industrial action. The IFSO subsequently upheld the insurer’s position.

Karen Stevens, the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman and CEO, said many travellers misunderstood the scope of cancellation cover. Policies commonly respond to defined disruption events, including severe weather, strikes or mechanical breakdowns, but not necessarily airline scheduling decisions or route reductions.

The case comes as aviation stakeholders warn that operational disruptions could become more frequent amid ongoing volatility in global fuel markets. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted growing pressure on airlines from fuel supply constraints linked to Middle East tensions and disruption to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy corridor. IATA has noted that fuel costs are rising sharply and some carriers are adjusting schedules and reducing capacity in response.

For travel insurers, the trend may increase customer complaints where policyholders expect reimbursement for higher replacement fares following operational cancellations. The IFSO reported that travel insurance disputes account for 17% of cases accepted for investigation since July 2025, while overall insurance complaints have reached record levels.

The case serves as a reminder for insurers, brokers, and assistance companies to communicate cancellation and disruption exclusions clearly, particularly as airline operational challenges continue to evolve.
