Most Brits choose the beach as their dream destination to work from

A Go.Compare Travel Insurance survey has revealed that the beach is UK remote workers’ ideal destination to work from.

This comes with the news that 76 per cent of eligible Brits would work remotely from another country for a week or so if their employer gave them permission to do so. The survey also found that 58 per cent felt that more employers should allow their staff to do this.

Overall, 32 per cent said beach destinations would be their preferred place to work from abroad, with working while on a city break was the second most popular destination option, chosen by 28 per cent of people. Countryside resorts (17 per cent) and all-inclusive resorts (14 per cent) ranked the lowest in travellers’ preferences.

In order to work remotely from another country, respondents said that there are some necessities they require to do so.

The main requirement is having free and stable WiFi (78 per cent), with a quiet space to work in coming in second (65 per cent).

Other facilities that people want for a workcation are flexible itineraries that allow them the time to get their work done (37 per cent), as well as easy access to local amenities (32 per cent) and air conditioning (29 per cent). For nine per cent of people, having free or discounted refreshments is also a must.

Meanwhile, 17 per cent of people said that they would only consider this type of break if travel agencies offered a specialised package, tailored to working while on a trip.

Insurance and tax implications

However, many are unaware of the other practicalities involved with remote working abroad. Sixty-nine per cent stated that they weren’t aware that working remotely overseas can potentially affect their tax payments, as well as their travel insurance.

Ceri McMillan, travel insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: “Whether it be a beach destination, a city break, or somewhere else entirely, the type of travel insurance you get is hugely linked to what you will be doing while abroad, and what you want covered. There are business-specific policies that cover any work-related trips, and if you’re going to be working remotely during your holiday, that might be what you need.

“It’s always important to get the right sort of insurance for your exact situation, so that you're covered should you encounter any problems while away. But by comparing deals from multiple providers, you can easily find a policy suited to your needs.

“It’s also important that you check the legal effects of working during your holiday, as there can be different tax and visa implications to consider depending on the destination you’re planning to visit.”
