At least 21 killed in Egypt bus crash involving foreign travellers
The crash in Egypt’s South Sinai region has left dozens injured, including Jordanian nationals, with patients transferred to several hospitals
At least 21 people have been killed and 29 injured after a bus crashed in Egypt’s South Sinai region, including a number of Jordanian nationals, according to authorities.
The accident happened this morning on the Dahab–Nuweibaa road, Egypt’s health ministry said.
Jordan’s foreign ministry said a number of its citizens were travelling on the bus and that preliminary information indicated Jordanians were among both the dead and injured. It did not provide a confirmed breakdown.
Those injured were initially taken to a local medical centre before some were transferred to Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital, Saint Catherine Hospital, and El Fayrouz Hospital, according to Egypt’s healthcare authority.
The crash occurred in a region with significant international tourism. Dahab, on the Gulf of Aqaba, is around 80km north of Sharm el-Sheikh and is a popular destination for diving and snorkelling.
Nuweibaa is another established Red Sea resort and is also home to a ferry port linking Egypt with the Jordanian city of Aqaba. The route is used by regional travellers and pilgrims travelling to and from Saudi Arabia.
Egyptian authorities have not provided further details on the cause of the crash.
In August, seven people, including five US citizens, were killed after a helicopter carrying tourists crashed in a remote area of northern Kenya.
