Kenya introduces inbound travel health insurance requirement for international visitors

Kenya has introduced mandatory inbound travel health insurance for eligible international visitors, creating a new compliance consideration for travel companies, employers, and other organisations arranging journeys to the country.

The requirement is expected to affect a broad range of international travellers, including tourists, business travellers, investors, expatriates, and international students. Airlines, travel agents, tour operators, and global mobility providers may also need to ensure customers and employees are aware of the updated entry requirements before departure.

The change is particularly relevant during Kenya’s busy holiday and safari season, when international arrivals typically increase. Travel providers and corporate travel teams should build the insurance requirement into pre-travel communications and checks to help reduce the risk of disruption at the border.

The update also has implications for the Kenyan diaspora. Travellers entering Kenya on foreign passports may need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), including children born overseas without Kenyan passports, dual citizens travelling on foreign passports, and former Kenyan citizens who have not regained citizenship.

Organisations supporting these travellers should advise them to check their eligibility for an eTA, review the inbound health insurance requirements, and ensure travel documentation is valid before departure.
