Jet fuel shortage warning prompts travel insurance push as Lufthansa cuts flights
Insurers highlight growing aviation supply risks and advise early policy uptake and coverage checks to mitigate potential disruption-related losses
Travel insurance providers are encouraging UK travellers to secure cover promptly after warnings of a potential jet fuel shortage in Europe, which could disrupt air travel in the coming weeks.
The alert follows comments from the head of the International Energy Agency on 16 April indicating the region had “maybe six weeks” of jet fuel remaining, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to create uncertainty for the aviation sector.
Rhys Jones, travel insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: “The suggestion that jet fuel supplies could tighten in the coming weeks highlights how quickly travel plans can be disrupted by global events.”
Jones noted that travel insurance provided broader protection beyond medical emergencies and baggage loss, including cover for cancellations due to bereavement, illness or other unforeseen circumstances, as well as some disruption-related costs.
He also urged intermediaries and policyholders to review annual policies carefully, warning that regional exclusions and coverage limits could apply. Destinations such as the US and parts of the Caribbean may require additional cover, while limits on trip duration, cruise travel and specialist activities should be checked in advance to avoid gaps in protection.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa has announced it will cut 20,000 short-haul European flights this summer as surging jet fuel costs have rendered many routes unprofitable. Prices have doubled since the start of the US–Israel conflict with Iran, disrupting Middle East fuel supply routes. The airline expects to save 40,000 metric tons of fuel, with several regional destinations suspended and potential for further permanent cuts.
Other carriers are also reducing capacity or raising fares. Analysts warn of continued disruption, higher ticket prices, and cancellations. While supply shortages are not yet confirmed, EU authorities are monitoring risks, highlighting growing operational and financial pressures across the aviation and travel insurance sectors.
