Iran launches attack on Kuwait International Airport
Iran has launched a wave of drones and missiles that hit a terminal at Kuwait International Airport on 3 June, causing material damage, killing at least one person, and wounding several others
According to Kuwait’s state news agency, Kuwait Airways has been forced to suspend its operations while flights were diverted to alternative airports until further notice.
Health ministry spokesman Abdullah al-Sanad said 25 ambulances were dispatched to Kuwait International Airport, adding that “63 injured individuals were received and distributed among hospitals ... this includes serious injuries ... head wounds, cerebral haemorrhages, amputations, and injuries resulting from explosions”.
Those injured included “civilians, and people working at the airport and travellers,” he added.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched a swarm of drones and missiles that struck the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters, based in Bahrain, in response to what it said was a US attack on Qeshm Island.
However, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Iranian attacks on US bases and forces in Bahrain failed.
The individual killed in the attack has been identified as an Indian national.
UK Foreign Minister Hamish Falconer labelled the incident a “completely unacceptable attack” and conveyed condolences to the Kuwaiti government, urging Iran to de-escalate.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared two members of Iran’s diplomatic mission “persona non grata” and demanded their immediate departure.
ITIJ continues to report on the fallout from the Iran war and the shaky ceasefire in place.
