Data implies more polices are purchased for two people

InsureMyTrip researchers have found that couples are more likely to purchase travel insurance than families.

According to InsureMyTrip data, 58 per cent of the policies purchased for trips in 2023 name two people on a plan. While 14 per cent name three or more.

However, it appears couples and families agree on their favourite vacation destination: Mexico.

Top five destinations for couples in 2023:

  1. Mexico
  2. Italy
  3. Bahamas
  4. United Kingdom
  5. Israel

Top five destinations for families in 2023:

  1. Mexico
  2. Bahamas
  3. Italy
  4. Dominican Republic
  5. United Kingdom

While travel insurance remains most popular with couples and older Americans, InsureMyTrip said important travel insurance benefits that travellers of all ages may want to consider are:

  • Emergency Medical cover: key for those travelling abroad, as most domestic health insurance plans will not cover medical bills outside of the home country

  • Cancel for Any Reason: the add-on/optional benefit gives travellers the flexibility to cancel a trip for something other than a covered reason (e.g., fear). There are eligibility requirements, but if those are met, you may be reimbursed fifty to seventy-five per cent of your insured, prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs if you cancel at least 48 hours before your departure.

In January, InsureMyTrip criticised Southwest Airlines’ reimbursement policy.
