Mexico remains the number one international destination for IMG customers, while Italy, Canada, the Bahamas, and the UK also made the top five

Mexico, Italy, Canada, the Bahamas, and the UK were the most popular international destinations for US travellers this autumn, according to new data from International Medical Group (IMG), a global provider of travel and health insurance and assistance services.

The findings were based on an analysis of travel itineraries for more than 40,000 IMG members travelling between 1 September and 30 November 2026.

Mexico retained its position as the leading destination for the fourth year running.

The Bahamas also entered the top five, replacing Spain, which featured in IMG’s 2025 rankings.

Travel spending also increased, with the average insured trip cost for autumn 2026 nearly 6% higher than during the same period last year. The number of travellers purchasing policies for autumn trips also rose by 15%.

Older travellers accounted for a significant proportion of IMG customers included in the analysis. Almost half were aged 65 or over, while 15% were aged 75 and above, highlighting the strong demand for autumn travel among older travellers.

“International travel continues to resonate across generations, particularly among retirees who have both the time and flexibility to explore the world,” said Justin Poehler, IMG Chief Commercial Officer.

Grant Hayes, Global Head of Travel for IMG, added: “Our autumn travel data reflects continued confidence among international travellers. Travellers are planning more trips and spending more on their travel experiences, while continuing to prioritise destinations that offer a mix of cultural experiences and relaxation.”

A recent study identified the US airports with the longest average flight delays, finding that smaller regional airports experienced some of the longest delays.
