France protests prompt closures as further travel disruption looms

Weekend demonstrations threaten visitor access to major attractions and events, raising fresh concerns for travel insurers and assistance providers

Businesses, museums, and major cultural events across France are preparing to close this weekend amid fears of renewed unrest, as authorities impose restrictions on demonstrations following violent protests.

The disruption follows a week of nationwide protests over public spending cuts, wages, and rising living costs, which escalated into rioting and looting in several cities last weekend.

France’s main student union, UNEF, has called for further demonstrations on Saturday 24 October, while the Yellow Vest movement has submitted plans for a march through central Paris.

Authorities have banned planned Saturday demonstrations in Marseille and Lyon, while President Emmanuel Macron has announced restrictions on protests deemed illegitimate. Trade union-organised demonstrations may proceed, although routes could be changed.

The measures follow widespread unrest that has resulted in approximately 2,700 arrests since last Saturday, according to France’s Justice Minister.

Several prominent attractions and events have announced precautionary closures. Art Basel Paris will remain closed throughout the weekend, while the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, and Fondation Louis Vuitton will shut on Saturday.

The Marseille Chamber of Commerce has also urged businesses to close temporarily amid concerns about further disturbances.

For travel insurers and assistance providers, the disruption raises potential challenges involving itinerary changes, cancelled excursions, and access to accommodation or transport in affected areas.

Travellers are being advised to monitor local security developments and follow instructions from authorities, particularly in cities where demonstrations are planned.

The French government is expected to announce further security measures as it seeks to prevent a repeat of last weekend’s violence.
