Flight disruption after Bonza enters administration

Bonza goes dog doo-dah

Australian budget airline Bonza has entered voluntary administration, abruptly cancelling all of its flights on 30 April

The cancellations have left thousands of passengers stranded. Local media reports suggest that the airline’s fleet of eight Boeing 737 MAX planes have been repossessed by creditors, although the airline has not confirmed this claim.

Bonza launched in 2023, and operated a range of domestic flights across eastern Australia. However, the company had struggled with aircraft shortages and low patronage since launch. It has now appointed Hall Chadwick to oversee its voluntary administration.

In a statement, Bonza said: “We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian aviation market.”

The Australian federal government has established a hotline for passengers whose flights were cancelled, while both Qantas and Virgin Australia have offered to assist anyone stranded by the cancellations.

Australian comparison site Finder recently reported that 17% of Australians have been left out of pocket due to insufficient insurance of some kind in the past three years.
