Flash flooding hits Greek islands
The Aegean islands of Mykonos and Paros are experiencing flash floods due to heavy rainfall on 31 March
The flooding was accompanied by winds of up to 74 kilometres per hour, according to a report by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).
There have been no reports of injuries on the two islands – which are both popular tourist destinations – however, authorities in Paros have reported that 13 people were stranded and subsequently rescued by firefighters due to the storm.
A stream in the fishing village of Naoussa on Paros has reportedly overflowed, flooding a number of properties and damaging nearly 40 vehicles, with the island’s Mayor, Costas Bizas, stating on television that government assistance will be needed to clear debris from local roads.
Further heavy rainfall continued into the early hours of 1 April as the storm moved towards the islands of Chios, Samos and Ikaria.
Greece topped the list of the most expensive European destinations for holiday cancellations in 2024, according to insurance firm Aviva.
